- !!!!!!! DO NOT APPLY for a puppy if you are already on another Breeder's waiting list. !!!!!!!
- **Deposits are applied to total price of puppy, may be non-refundable if: client changes their mind, go with another puppy from another breeder, are not ready for puppy when it's ready to go home, do not have funds,... If a person has not been offered a puppy within 2 yrs of approval date ALL Deposit Funds will be refunded in Full.
- As a breeder I am commited to my puppy clients and hope and expect them to be commited to their resereved puppy as well. When a person bales out on a puppy, it makes me look unprepared and unprofessional. I then have to go to a next person on the list or a client not planning to get their puppy earlier than planned, then they question why a puppy is suddenly available, why the person did not take the puppy or changed their mind, is something wrong with the puppy and so on. A puppy is a family member, a very serious commitment and if you are not completely sure you are ready, then it is best that you wait and not apply.
Common Questions
Do shiba and shikoku make good family pets?
Absolutely! I have found over the past 20yrs to never had an issue with the Shibas in my home around my child or others. Starting with a breeder that has dogs with excellent tempuraments is vital for this reason. It doesn't matter if the breeder has smaller children either. I have dogs that were not whelped in a home with small children and they absolutely adore kids. That is an example of an excellent tempurament and how it impacts interaction with children and other humans, dogs,..
what if i don't want a show dog?
This is a common misunderstanding. You see, our pet puppies and show puppies come from the same litters. We show the parents of our puppies, because just like 4-H we are bringing our breeding stock in front of judges to be examined. It also takes a dog with a solid tempurament to be able to be shown. Our show puppies are not just sold to anyone. They are typically sold between only other reputable breeders to share pedigree lines or advance a breeder's program forward. The majority of our puppies go into pet homes, so there is a high chance you may actually end up with a show quality puppy, with both parents being show dogs.
how trained will my puppy be? can you help with training when we get our puppy home?
My puppies go home 90% potty trained, completely crate trained and even partially recall trained. My clients receive my support long before their puppy goes home. I refer them to books and other resources, a puppy shopping list, how to puppy proof their home and yard, how to set up their home and puppy play areas. They go home with my "Puppy Tips and Tricks" guide so that they know what to do day one, two...Week 1, week 2,... I am also a phone call, text or email away providing 24/7 support not matter time of day.
Do they get along with other dogs?
Yes. Again this goes back to an excellent tempurament that reputable breeder's dogs have. Think of it, these dogs have to stand inches apart without reacting or moving in the show ring and keep in mind that they are all intact dogs. So even with hormones raging, smelling others dogs and so on. Early Socialization and Puppy Socialization Kidergarden Class is vital for dogs to grow up knowing how to interact with other dogs.
can i socialize my puppy with friends and relatives adult dogs?
Depending where your is in it's vaccination schedule. Of course new owners are excited to show off their new puppy to friends and relatives, but just like bringing a new baby home form the hospital new puppy owners need to fight this urge to take your new puppy to friends/relatives houses where other dogs will be. Your puppy is going home with it's first round of vaccinations, but it is best to play things safe the first week or two. Let your puppy get settled in it's new enviroment with you, it's family. After that it is fine to have friends over to greet puppy. In fact it is very good for your puppy to get used to people coming to your home.
How involved with the pregnancy, delivery, puppy whelping process will we be?
For clients on the waitlist they are welcome to be involved with ongoing aspects of a potential litter. From the selection of parents to the day of the breeding, pregnancy confirmations with ultrasounds, watching mama dog's belly grow, xrays to know how many puppies to expect and if they would like to view afterwards, the delivery. They will also be able to view daily live streaming videos of their puppies playing.
will my dog get along with my cat?
Yes. I have personally done both scenarios. An adult cat with a new puppy and an adult dog with a kitten. I always recommend to my clients that as long as they provide a high area for their cat to escape to if they get tired of the dog. Both will learn to respect each other's space. I have gone into detail with my clients how to safely introduce a new dog, kitten, cat and even baby into a dog family.
how much do they shed, grooming needed and how often to bathe?
Both Shiba and Shikoku are double coated breeds and "blow" (shed) their undercoat 2 times a year. It is right after that time that you will also feel the "goat coat" (thin and slightly rough) and that is a good time to give a complete bath to loosen up any of the leftover dead coat. The wonderful thing about these breeds is that they do not have "doggy odor" or need any grooming other than nails.
are we going to be able to see or tour your kennel? will we be able to meet the parents of our puppy?
I do not regulary open my kennel (home) to the public. However, puppy clients will meet their puppy when it is 6 weeks of age, a few weeks before they pick them up. Potential puppy clients are welcome to attend any dog show that I am at to meet me or my dogs. Most mother dogs can be protective of their pups and really look "worse for wear" right after birthing and whelping a litter of puppies, but depending on the parents, yes sometimes can meet one or both. Sometimes I use a stud dog from another reputable breeder, so not in those cases.
